Archives

For 15 years I’ve worked in archives and special collections. Along the way, I wrote a master’s thesis about women working in the comic book industry in the United States and a doctoral dissertation about gay and lesbian life in Atlanta from 1940-1970. My professional and academic backgrounds have led to opportunities to work with various communities, sometimes through speaking engagements and presentations.

Steve Goss of WABE (90.1 FM) interviewed me for his radio feature “The Changing Face of Atlanta: Atlanta’s Gay Past,” which aired 06 June 2010. In March 2011, I gave a workshop “Activating the Archives,” and lecture about creative uses of archives at the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage at Brown University. In July, I attended the Archives Leadership Institute, a program hosted by the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

I am active in national and state organizations, including the Society of American Archivists, the Society of Georgia Archivists, and the Academy of Certified Archivists. Currently I serve on the Editorial Board of Provenance and on the Diversity Committee of the Society of American Archivists and co-chair the Diversity Task Force of the Academy of Certified Archivists.

My Scottish father traveled across the USA in 1932 as part of his training to head up a further education college in a Missionary College in Malawi. Comments (summary) and postcards are part of this report. We wondered if anyone was interested?

President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia was one of the summer students
